Come summer in Logan, lawns shift into overdrive. Warm nights, humidity and the odd thunderstorm mean grass can put on serious growth in a week - so how often should you really be mowing?
The short answer: weekly
Through the peak SE QLD growing season (roughly October to April), most lawns look their best mowed weekly. Fortnightly is fine for slower-growing or shadier yards, but stretch it much further in summer and you’ll be scalping the lawn every time you cut - which stresses it and leaves it patchy.
Follow the one-third rule
Never remove more than a third of the leaf in a single mow. Cutting too low (“scalping”) exposes the soil, invites weeds and dries the lawn out fast in the heat. Mowing little and often keeps the grass dense, green and far better at crowding weeds out on its own.
It depends on your grass type
Buffalo varieties like Sir Walter and couch lawns are vigorous summer growers and usually want weekly attention. Zoysia is a little slower. Whatever you’ve got, raising the mower height slightly in summer helps the lawn hold moisture and handle the heat.
Going away?
If you’re heading off, get a cut in just before you leave and one soon after you’re back, rather than letting it get away from you. A regular schedule takes the thinking out of it altogether.
